Dyad: Two bodies in close proximity.

PERFORMANCE, PARTICIPATORY

A series of studies that explore the ways two bodies relate to each other through movement-based sound interaction.

Each study maps a different aspect of posture to a corresponding element of sound. Orientation to pitch generates a sequence of intervals out of relative facings. Tilt to tempo generates polyrhythms out of bowing. Acceleration narrates one-word-at-a-time. Touch builds harmonies.

The shifting harmonies and rhythms generated by the choreography give us a different way of knowing the ways we complement, counter, and connect with each other.

Walkabout (Orientation : Pitch)

Originally conceived of as set choreography, the first study which mapped the 360-degrees of possible facings to the diatonic scale was refashioned as a participatory experience. In this interaction a face-to-face encounter is both recognizable (an open 5th interval) and distinct from back-to-back (a 4th) which is distinct from front-to-back (an 8th or octave).

As participants move through the designated stations, they find themselves in a series of precise configurations. The harmonies generated oscillate between tension and resolution, expanding and contracting with each choice.
